The truth about customer data

Why do you think every corporation wants to know more about you?

Because customer data is the lifeblood of profitable marketing.

Blending customer behavior, economic trends and product data gives you the closest thing to being able to predict the future.

While data is the most valuable asset for predicting marketing outcomes, we are drowning in information but starved for knowledge.

How do you pick which data and which data sources are going to be valuable for your marketing?

Google analytics will tell you where your traffic is coming from. Time people spend on your website. And what pages are converting best.

Customer reviews may be insightful for parts of your business that need improving.

And social media interaction can give insights into the type of content to focus on for future campaigns.

However, as I've said in the past, there is a lot of smoke and mirrors in marketing. And many of these data points can be faked.

Fake traffic, fake reviews, Fake social media follows.

A large part of what you do to create profitable marketing campaigns is to cut away the fluff. And there is a lot of fluff to be cut.

What it all boils down to is the data you have on your customers. Actual real life people that have spent their hard earned money to buy something from you.

That can't be faked.

With this data you can understand in depth who your customers really are.

Open the document containing your previous customers information and answer the following questions…

What major city or state has more of your customers living in it than any other? Research their area. The politics, geography and landmarks.

What's your top selling product with customers in this area?

What coupon is used by these customers the most?

What's the average purchase amount for these customers?

Are the majority of these customers men or women?

What marketing channel was used to obtain these customers?

What's their pain points?

Ask yourself...

What keeps them awake at night, staring at the ceiling, unable to fall asleep as it relates to your product or service?

What are they frustrated about?

What is causing them pain, right now, as it relates to your product or service?

What is the single biggest problem that you can solve for them?

What do they secretly, privately desire most?

Immerse yourself in their world. Do what you can to get inside their heads until their deepest needs and dreams become evident to you.

If you've been in their business, walked in their shoes, laughed and cried with them, then you'll begin to understand their deeper reasons.

Tapping into that deeper reason is where you want to connect with your potential customer.

Then create an emotional way of connecting to the potential customer using terms and phrasing that resonates to what's going on inside their heads.

You want to solve their problem, not just sell them something.

The more customer data you have, the more you will be able to understand them and drastically increase purchasing conversions.

Harness the Power of Faces in Marketing

Our brain is hardwired to look at faces among all other objects. We can't resist this impulse.

In fact, research has shown that two-day-old newborns orient toward face or face-like configurations rather than toward other, equally complex, non-facial stimuli.

We just process faces differently than objects, and text.

Face processing in humans recruits a complex and distributed neural system composed of multiple regions.

For marketers, this can be an advantage… and a disadvantage.

Because while faces can drive attention toward specific elements, they can also divert attention from the core message you're trying to communicate.

Three Tactics Using Facial Detection

Use faces strategically on your landing pages

If a section of your landing page presents a face, it will be the first thing users will look at.

But is that always what you want? Or do you want visitors to look at your headline first—where you communicate your value proposition?

Most of the time, markers use text and other images to deliver their message. So test to see if the presence of faces increases or decreases conversions.

Gaze cueing

From the moment we're born, we learn to focus on human faces.

And if faces stand out the most for us, eyes are the first thing we look at when detecting a face.

So if you use faces on your website, direct their gazes toward the most important elements on your page, like a CTA button or a form.

And place negative elements, like the price, outside of the gaze.

Use faces to divert attention away from external platforms to yours

According to research, including human faces with averted gaze in advertisements increases the amount of attention paid by users.

Yep, using faces in your ads and banners also works.

And according to one experiment, ads featuring faces got 11x more attention than ads without faces.

Transform Your Marketing with These Gestalt Principles

Remember when you tried to bake cookies and ended up with one giant cookie because they all merged together?

That can be what your brand and funnels look like to prospects when you're not aware of the Gestalt principles.

Here's why: When we look at the world, our minds strive to make sense of what we see, and oftentime, it takes shortcuts.

The Gestalt principles describe the different ways our minds perceive order in the visual stimuli around us.

The Gestalt principles are a psychological framework that explains how our brain naturally groups elements together, recognizes patterns, and creates a coherent perception of our surroundings.

There are 10 primary Gestalt principles. Today we're going to look at:

Proximity and similarity.
Figure ground.
Closure.

Three ways you can leverage Gestalt Principles

1) Increase AOV with proximity and similarity
Grouping related information or products together can impact how users interact with your offer.

An example is grouping different products in the same visual, to make the user perceive them as part of the whole group.

An obvious example is where the brand proposes a complete outfit, rather than just a single piece of clothing.

You can apply this to any niche.

List all your products and see if you can bundle them so they accomplish all the outcomes your prospect desires.

2) Stand out using the figure ground effect
If you check the ads that Meta runs on its own platform, you'll see most of them follow the figure ground principle.

This effect describes how our mind tries to identify which part of an image is the figure or object, and which part is the background.

If you look at ads run by Meta on its own platform, they follow this principle.

Most of the real estate of the visual is background, with smaller elements in the center of the image that stand out.

With the plain background and the centralized elements, it's easier to first separate the ad creative from the rest of the Facebook and Instagram feed.

3) Make people scroll using the closure principle
This principle is similar to open loops. When an image is missing parts, the brain wants to complete what we see.

You can leverage this principle in the "above the fold" section of your landing pages.
